About Me

  • SumoMe

Hi!  I’m Mark.  I’m a 42-year old Cajun who has found his way to New York.  I am a practicing veterinarian with a special interest in canine behavior.  I LOVE my job and my life.  I have an 8-year old daughter, Lauryn.  I have 2 dogs, Gus and Roxy, and 3 cats, Fred, Jessie and Kelly.

I became a veterinarian through a somewhat convoluted route.  I joined The U.S. Air Force right out of high school and served our country for 6 years.  My Air Force job was a combat medic/EMT.  I started going to college at night during my last year of service.  I was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1994 and began undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University (LSU).  I was also a mechanic in the Army National Guard, so if you need work done on your car, I can help with that too!  (Not really 😉 ).  So, for all you Ali G fans out there, I’m the veteran veterinarian.

I attended veterinary school at LSU as well and graduated in 2002.  I moved to New York 3 days after graduation and have been a practicing veterinarian ever since.  Presently, I ownLevittown Animal Hospital in Levittown, NY.  I started The Balanced Canine in 2008 because I have a passion for addressing canine behavior issues, not many veterinarians properly address these issues, and they are the NUMBER ONE cause for euthanasia in our patients.  I started my own practice at that time in order to be able to effectively address behavior issues.  I am now achieving my goal of reaching people who need help with their dogs’ behavior.

This blog allows me to reach MANY more people than I can in practice on “my days off.”  Many behavior issues can be dealt with remotely, especially in this day and age.  Technology allows for instant communication and video conferencing is a breeze.  I hope to one day begin offering behavior consults via video conference, but until then, I will be discussing behavior issues here.

Warmest Regards,

  1. I really like the balanced explanation about how to help a fear aggressive dog. I am sure that much of this straight forward and practical explanation comes from being a veterinarian. Some of the trainer sites end up getting very emotive and also critical of other trainers, rather than just focusing on the practical side for the benefit of the dog. I am studying canine behaviour at present (originally from the UK, then living and training with horses using horse psychology in RSA for 11 years and now living in Spain – arrived 3 weeks ago!)… My website is South African based but eventually I hope to do something similar here in Spain. I am keen to receive posts.

    • Thanks for the kind words. You are right, there is a lot of finger pointing and criticism in the training world. This is just a function of the fact that people learn one method, and in order to defend that method they bash other methods. Fact is, all methods work, but not every method works with every dog and some methods are more effective in certain situations. Best of luck to you in your studies!
